FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. EYES MAY 5TH 2012 BOUT WITH MANNY PACQUIAO

Floyd Mayweather Jr. does not plan on taking another 16-month vacation from the boxing ring, like he did after easily outpointing Shane Mosley in May 2010.

Instead, Mayweather, who knocked out Victor Ortiz on Sept. 17, will make a relatively hasty return: May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, adviser Leonard Ellerbe told ESPN.com on Wednesday night.

Mayweather’s opponent has not been determined but Ellerbe said, “We’re looking to make the biggest fight possible and everyone knows what that fight is, the little fella.”

Ellerbe was, of course, referring to Manny Pacquiao. The welterweight champions and the top two pound-for-pound fighters in the world have been on a collision course for years. However, negotiations have fallen apart over drug testing protocol.

Pacquiao is set to fight Juan Manuel Marquez for the third time Nov. 12 at the MGM Grand and is a heavy favorite.

(FLYERS) AFRICAN AMERICAN HOCKEY PLAYER RACIST ENCOUNTER

Black NHL player Wayne Simmonds says he’s not going to comment any more on a fan throwing a banana peel on the ice as the Philadelphia Flyers forward was attempting an overtime shootout goal against the Detroit Red Wings in an exhibition game in London, Ontario Thursday night.

“It was unfortunate that this incident happened but I am above this sort of stuff,” said Simmons in a statement Friday. “This is something that is out of my control. Moving forward, this incident is something I will no longer comment on so I can just focus on playing hockey for the Philadelphia Flyers.”

Simmonds drew strong support from other NHL players on Twitter. St. Louis Blues forward Chris Stewart tweeted: “The incident that happened in london tonight involving my best friend wayne simmonds was simply disgusting, its 2011 ppl need to grow up.”

PEYTON MANNING TO RECEIVE POTENTIAL CAREER ENDING SURGERY

The ever-changing story of Peyton Manning’s(notes) future in the NFL just took a very bad turn. According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Manning underwent cervical fusion surgery on Thursday morning, a procedure that will put him out of the game for at least 2-3 months. This follows a May 23 surgery to repair a bulging disc in his neck.

The healing process from that surgery proved to be frustratingly slow, and after consulting with half a dozen neurosurgeons, it was decided that the best course of action for Manning was to have a one-level cervical fusion in his neck. In short, cervical fusion is when surgeons remove a herniated disc and put a bone graft in its place.

YAO MING SET TO RETIRE FROM (NBA) HOUSTON ROCKETS

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Rockets All-Star center Yao Ming is retiring after nine NBA seasons, according to a person with direct knowledge of his decision.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity, because Yao has not announced his plans. Yao has scheduled a July 20 news conference in Shanghai to talk about his future.

Yahoo! Sports first reported that Yao is retiring. The person says neither Yao nor his representatives have informed the league office of Yao’s decision, and the league says Yao has not filed paperwork that would make his decision final.

Neither the Rockets nor the league are allowed to comment on Yao’s decision because of the lockout.

The 7-foot-6 Yao was the top overall pick in the 2002 draft, but his promising career has been hampered by foot and leg injuries.

MUHAMMED ALI’S GIFT TO DIRK NOWITZKI

Former heavyweight champion and legendary sports icon Muhammad Ali didn’t waste any time in letting the most recent NBA Finals MVP know exactly how he feels. According to Dirk Nowitzki(notes) — last month’s main man as the Dallas Mavericks won it all — Ali sent him a glove after Dallas’ Finals win with an inscription that read “You are the greatest.”

Minutes before he strode onto a balcony to greet his fans and followers in his hometown of Wurzburg, Germany, Dirk took the time to answer several pointed questions for Spiegel, Germany’s most famous and prominent weekly magazine. And while we should probably be wary of the translation inherent in back and forth sessions like these (there are some questions and answers that scan a little dodgy once translated to English), the story behind the Ali sustains.

KOBE BRYANT PLANS TO PLAY IN CHINA DURING NBA LOCKOUT

Kobe Bryant may take his talents to China during the NBA’s lockout.

There are preliminary talks about a basketball tour to China this summer — and perhaps beyond — in which the Lakers superstar, who has called China a “home away from home” and has an enormous following there, would be the headliner with several other NBA stars forming two or three barnstorming teams.

Bryant and his agent Rob Pelinka are trying to put together the tour, said Minnesota Timberwolves rookie forward Derrick Williams, who also is represented by Pelinka.

Williams said several clients of Pelinka’s agency, the Landmark Sports Agency, could be involved in the tour.

NBA LOCKOUT

Though David Stern maintains some optimism that a deal can somehow be reached (despite all signs to the contrary), Thursday’s meeting in New York will likely determine whether or not NBA team owners will lockout the players. From NBA.com: “With the clock ticking down, NBA owners and their representatives are still hoping for a last-second miracle, but are preparing for a worst-case outcome that could produce the league’s first labor lockout in 13 years. The two sides have agreed to meet one last time Thursday in New York before the Thursday midnight deadline when the collective bargaining agreement expires. While there was no ‘lockout vote’ per se taken at Tuesday’s Board of Governors meeting at the Hilton Anatole, NBA commissioner David Stern and deputy commissioner Adam Silver would not rule out the possibility of a shutdown.

‘The owners authorized the labor-relations committee to do whatever steps were necessary to effectuate a new collective bargaining agreement,’ said Silver. ‘And so that committee has the full authority of all 30 teams to act in whatever way they deem appropriate.’ Silver said that during the meeting that lasted nearly four hours, the board heard a presentation from the labor relations committee, led by San Antonio Spurs owner Peter Holt and a presentation from the revenue sharing committee, led by Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck. The National Basketball Players Association has been urging the owners to implement revenue sharing as a way to offset what the league says is $300 million in losses among the 30 NBA teams.”

LEBRON SAYS “D-WADES THE WORST FINISHER IN THE LEAGUE”

According to the Three Amigos down in South Beach, tough love is what’s helping the team to gel, with the end-result being wins. From the Miami Herald: “It’s in the locker room where LeBron James can tell Dwyane Wade, with impunity, that he’s the worst finisher in the league and can’t even make a layup. It’s there where a collection of stars is becoming a constellation of cohesion. It’s in the locker room — and for the next seven days, aboard an airplane to the West — where the Heat is becoming a team.

The Heat (13-8) has won four consecutive games since its players-only meeting in Dallas eight days ago. It took a series of setbacks — four losses in five games — to move this team forward. In Dallas, players opened up, reached out and didn’t hold back. Not even Wade, the team’s co-captain, was immune to criticism. ‘I think we all looked at each other and we [held] each other accountable for our games,’ Wade said. ‘I hear from LeBron all the time now that I’m the worst finisher in the league now because I can’t make a layup sometimes. But it helps me out because now I want to prove him wrong. We just stay on each other and I think that meeting kind of helped us going forward to let everyone know, ‘It’s fine, I can take it,’ and we’ve been doing it.’”

LAKERS LAMAR ODOM TRADE REJECTED

Lakers Attempt To Move Up (Lamar Odom For No. 2 pick) Rejected

If there is any truth to the rumor that Lamar Odom was offered for the No. 2 pick and rejected, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, Timberwolves general manager David Kahn should expect a Christmas card from the Kardashians:

The Lakers tried to move up in Thursday’s NBA draft by offering forward Lamar Odom to Minnesota for the Timberwolves’ No. 2 overall pick, but Minnesota turned them down, according to two NBA officials who were not authorized to speak publicly about the trade talks.

The Lakers wanted to use the No. 2 pick to select Arizona’s forward Derrick Williams, the officials said.

DIRK NOWITZKI – THE GERMAN SHEPHERD BITES BACK

Dwade Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh all celebrated exuberantly after their exciting brand of basketball led them to a 15 point lead late in the fourth quarter of Game 2 versus the Dallas Mavericks.  After Wade hit a seemingly ‘nail in the coffin’ three-pointer and left both hands up, posing for the cameras and fans, Mavs star Dirk Nowitzki decided he’d seen enough.

Nowitzki fueled a furious 22-5 fourth-quarter run by the Mavs, including a game-winning, left-handed layup with three seconds remaining, to pull one of the greatest comebacks in NBA Finals history.

HEATWAVE – MIAMI HEAT -”THE HEAT IS ON”

Do you hear that? Yea that’s the sound of all the nay sayers that had much to say about Lebron James and the Big 3. The Heat were able to close out 4 close game against the number 1 team in the Eastern Conference the Chicago Bulls.  The NBA’s most polarizing team was able to win 4 straight games doing something critics said they couldn’t do by closing out games in the 4th quarter.

Critics were force to watch Lebron James hit big shot after big shot.  Oh yea and he also shut down the NBA’s MVP Derrick Rose who essential was playing the role of Lebron James when he played in Cleveland. Proving that 1 star will not cut it in search for a title.  Wade and Bosh also added an element of strong defense and timely baskets that will allow the Heat to play for the Larry O’Brien trophy.  It’s is June and with that the Heat will RISE! Miami Heat fans ”WE ON 1″ .

SHAQ ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

He was a prolific producer of rebounds and record albums. And nicknames, too, as if at 7-foot-1 and 350 pounds he was too big for the simple ”Shaq” that made him an instantly recognizable, one-name star in all of his endeavors.

Shaquille O’Neal had more than 28,000 points and almost 4 million Twitter followers. He appeared in six NBA finals, three times as the MVP, and seven feature films, twice in a starring role.

A 15-time All-Star, four-time champion and the 2000 NBA Most Valuable Player, Shaquille O’Neal announced his retirement on Twitter on Wednesday after spending most of his 19th season on the Boston Celtics bench, in street clothes because of leg injuries.

Along with a mid-afternoon tweet saying, ”im retiring,” O’Neal included a link to a 16-second video of him saying, ”We did it; 19 years, baby. Thank you very much. That’s why I’m telling you first: I’m about to retire. Love you. Talk to you soon.”

LEBRON JAMES TO PLAY FOOTBALL?

Lebron James is 6’9 and weighs 275 pounds with rare gifted athletic ability . For his size and weight he would be a nightmare on the field just as he is on the court. If Lebron James were to switch sports,  his NFL success would possibly exceed his NBA success making him one of the greatest  athletes ever.

Lebron would  join the company of Jim Brown and Bo Jackson who are hall of famers in their respective sports. If Lebron was to play quarterback he would have multiple advantages. First would be his size making it easier to look over the offense and defense of linemen, also enabling him to elude different defenders by breaking tackles ,  second would be his vision already a great passer and floor general his vision would help him find different receivers on the field. Third would be speed favoring him to out run defenders and extend plays similar to Michael Vick.

You can also place James at wide receiver which would be an automatic mismatch for undersize defenders. Its simple, just throw the ball up.

THE MAN AND THE SHOE (MICHAEL JORDAN)

The Greatest man to ever play. The Greatest shoe ever made.

We’ve heard this a thousand times. But no matter how many times it’s said, I still nod my head in agreement every time I hear it. Whether it was argued comically by Mars Blackmon, or heatedly disputed by guys at the barber shop or by kids on the schoolyard, it was just as exciting to hear it.

Watching him play was magical. It wasn’t just amazing that he could get so high mid-air, it was that he could avoid mutiple defenders while in mid-air. It wasn’t just that he could do reverse lay ups with little effort, it was that he could hang up there for 5 seconds over 3 people. You get my drift. He was a God. It was just as magical when I opened up my box of J’s. Still to this day, it never gets old.

The collaboration between Nike and Michael Jordan was triumphant. It was explosive. Combining the marketing and design efforts of Tinker Hartfield with the champion, charisma and heart of Michael Jordan was a match made in heaven. As time has passed, people involved in the operation have come and gone. But nonetheless, the man and the shoe continue to an icon in both sports and fashion.

Kobe Bryant & Wife destroys Gasol’s Marriage?

It’s been a long month for Pau Gasol, and it looks like the summer will be even longer.  There was report saying Pau Gasol’s girlfriend broke up with him and that Pau was blaming Kobe’s wife for it.

“I have to learn from this,” Gasol said. ”I have to learn that when something happens off the court, you have to keep it off the court.”

He was referring to the report that he stopped talking to Bryant during the postseason because Bryant’s wife, Vanessa, had contributed to the breakup of Gasol and his longtime girlfriend. Lakers fans will remember that Karl Malone once publicly accused Vanessa of interfering with his personal life in a similar fashion.

As if that wasn’t enough, Marc Spears wrote at Yahoo that “Pau Gasol … seemed to confirm reports that he was bothered by off-the-court issues. “I’m going to look back and see everything that’s been going on,” he said. “Try to handle it better. And whatever goes on, on or off the floor, just try to keep it that way and not let it affect anything that goes on on the floor.”

You could argue that Pau Gasol’s off-court issue was “lies” about his personal life, but why would an erroneous report cause an issue for him? That wouldn’t make sense. The only logical conclusion is that Pau is confirming there were some off-court problems going on with him. The only question is whether or not the issue was a problem with Kobe, a problem with his girlfriend, or both.

Additionally, something else to ponder, for what it’s worth, is this tweet from Scott and BR who form the morning team on Double X sports radio in San Diego “Kobe Bryant should be ashamed, you NEVER tell you wife your friend is cheating, especially KOBE who we all know is not an angel!”

TREND REPORT BY JINA GG MURAYOSHI

Today’s Trend Report will focus on achieving the new look inspired by the ’70s with “Flare Jeans”

As you may have already heard a hundred times in fashion news this spring, this season is all about the ’70s!

The Key thing to keep in mind when wearing flares is that we must refrain from channeling the ’70s too literally,

for example it may not be a good idea to pair a peasant top with this new trend. The look we do want is to pair a mid rise flare jean with a tucked in cardigan or polished blazer which gives off a prim look! Or you can also follow Harper’s Bazaar’s Senior fashion editor Joanna Hillman and wear your flares with an oversized button up jacket, add an electric blue patent purse to give off a modern look. With these inspirational looks, hopefully your ready to trade into your skinnies and be daring and try out a pair of 70-styled jeans! To help my fellow risk takers accomplish this look, below are a list of designers that have incorporated this look into their S/S collection.
